Neverwinter Nights at Team Element
by Jex on Monday, January 24, 2005 |
Neverwinter Nights has come to Team Element on what will hopefully be, a long and interesting journey. Neverwinter Nights (from herein known as NWN) is a completely different game from what is normally played here at Team Element, and it should also be played a little bit differently than any other NWN game.
Coming from a roleplaying background myself from my youth, I would like to bring the values of table-top play over to online PC gaming. So with this in mind I would like all participating players to step into their character when we run our games. How this will pan in real terms I have no idea, yet - but if we are able to apply role-playing into the games, then that will be adopted as the nrom when we do play.
For those of you unfamiliar with role-playing, I will briefly explain what will be expected. When you create your character, you must think up a background for him/her. Where was s/he born, what was their early days like (e.g. did they grow up on a farm helping out their injured father who fought in the goblin wars, or, in the city as the son/daughter of a political advisor to the ambassador?), and what was it that drove them to a life of adventure rather than settling down to be a shoe-smith or artisan?
As you think up your characters background, you will start to build up an image of his/her ego. What code of conduct do they follow, what values do they hold dear and how do they react in situations? Is you character a huge mountain of a man but an outright coward who runs at the first sign of danger (but who later, over time, come to terms with himself and turns into a hero), or is your character a sly tradeswoman who knows how to sell orcsbane to a goblin?
Whatever you choose as your characters persona, you should try to play that persona in game. Whenever you react to NCP's or other players characters "In Game" or "In Character", you must do so via your alter ego. Whenever you wish to discuss specific game rules, points your are unsure about or anything outside the "world", do so in a normal manner, or, "Out of Character".
The Dungeon Master's job is to provide the 'character' to each and every other living, or unliving, being that you encounter. This will be done by trying a myriad of different voices and accents to flesh them out. Interaction with NPC's in game will be necessary to advance the plot. You will need to talk with other characters and find out information before you can advance your progress.
